This instalment of Afrodelics was inspired by the artistry and poetry of African proverbs. Particularly, bemba proverbs. It focuses on the use of proverbs in the Bemba culture. For the Bemba people, proverbs are a tool used to communicate the wisdom, morals and philosophies of their people. Not only that, proverbs are tools used to display eloquence and command of the Bemba language. As the late Nigerian author, Chinua Achebe, wrote in his book Things Fall Apart, “Among the Ibo the art of conversation is regarded very highly, and proverbs are the palm-oil with which words are eaten.” This is no different with the Bemba tribe, who also hold proverbs in high reverence.  Each piece in this volume of Afrodelics is a visual representation of a Bemba proverb.
Imiti ikula empanga (Young trees growing are the future forest)
Mayo mpapa naine nkaku papa. (Mother carry me, I will also carry you in the future).
Umukulu ekele alamona ukutali ukucila umulumendo emakene. (An elder who is seated still sees further than a young person who is standing)
